This averages out to 11.86 miles per run. This brings my yearly totals to 653.39 miles over 59 straight days of running. This is averaging out to just over 11 miles (11.07) a run for the year!

I ran 10 half marathon or longer routes with 5 of them in a row.

I am still on track for both of my goals for this year. To run all 365 days and to average 10 miles per run. I hope reach at least 350 miles for the month of March to make the quarter 1 total of 1000 miles.

How did your February turn out and what do you have planned for March?

Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-85213424792838427222020-11-05T11:20:00.001+02:002020-11-05T11:20:26.381+02:00Running in the Rain
Today, the forecast was a chance of rain. Before I went out, I looked at the radar and then at the sky. I figured about halfway during the run, it would start to rain. I grabbed my jacket and then went out.

At first, it was nice and sunny. But then a little over 3 miles in, it started to rain lightly. After about 2 more miles, the skies opened up and the rain really started to fall. I was getting soaked. But, I was having so much fun. Its so freeing to run in the rain.

Earlier this year, was the first time I ever ran in the rain. I used to use rain days as a day off or adjust my schedule and go out a different time. I was always afraid my shoes would get ruined or I would slip.

The trick is to be prepare for the rain. You cannot go as fast or hard as you normally would. You can easily slip. I left the phone at home and put my ID in two baggies so it would not get wet.

The hardest part of running in the rain is not the rain itself or getting wet from the rain, but when you are running on the sidewalk next to a street and cars drive by and you can get splashed.

I adjusted my route to avoid certain streets where the water starts to run when it rains. I also got lucky. A bus was about to pass me and I was as far over as I was able to. The bus driver saw me and moved slightly over to avoid the big puddle and splashing me. So did the driver behind him.

I then cut through the park to avoid another street with a curve that usually has big puddle when it rains. Lastly, I finished my route by running on the walking path rather than on the sidewalk. This way I avoided the last chance to get splashed.

I completed 9 miles and I was soaked. But I had so much fun, that I would do it again.

When I arrived home, I put everything in the wash and newspaper in my shoes to dry them out.

Don't be afraid to run in the rain. Its just water and you will dry out.
Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-66360998025640113252017-06-06T03:00:00.000+03:002017-06-06T03:00:00.678+03:00My Favorite kind of RunI like to mix and match my runs during the month. Sometimes I do wear a watch if I am going for speed or a new distance. Other times I listen to a podcast, the radio or a playlist. And a few times I run without either. I even leave the cell phone behind as well. I have a totally free run.

These usually turn out to be some of my favorite runs of the month. All day long I am on the computer for my job. I am usually listening to music during my commute to and from work. But when I head out on my run without music or a watch, I can really clear my head.

My mind wanders. It goes from the day at work to what I need to do tomorrow. I just think and day dream. It is a great feeling.

Do you ever go out for a run and leave everything behind? How do those runs compare to your others?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-11071667747096001732017-06-05T03:00:00.000+03:002017-06-05T03:00:00.247+03:00Dogs and Their Inconsiderate Owners Near the end of my run, I was contemplating either extending it by a mile or two or just ending it. I was already over 5 miles and was satisfied with how it went. The last mile was my fastest and I was cruising comfortably.

I was on the walking path near my house and I passed a lady with a small dog. I quickly noticed the dog was not a leash and started running towards me. She started calling after her dog. The dog did not listen. At first it just started barking and looking like it was going to jump on me. I kept running thinking it would stop and return to its owner as others have done before.

It kept following me and jumping. I finally had enough. I turned around, stomped my foot and screamed at the dog very loud. The dog got scared and ran away. I then screamed to the woman "What the F&ck? and held out my middle finger to her.

I am not proud of that. In fact I felt pretty embarrassed. However, because the dog was jumping on, I had go from a fast sprint to a complete stop a lot quicker that I usually do. At the time, I was worried about an injury. I was just very angry and annoyed. This is not the first time this has happened.

How often does this happen to you and how do you usually handle these situations?

Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-300693995242345542017-04-18T21:02:00.000+03:002017-04-18T21:02:03.865+03:00So CloseMy current running goal is to break 45:00 for a 10K. My time frame is July when I may have a race scheduled. Over the weekend, I came very close and reached the 10K mark in just under 46:00 at 45:58 to be exact.

I was surprised that it occurred. It has been a few months since I have completed a run that I would consider fast. I have run a a few distances during that time, that were around the 10K length and some of those were completed in under 50:00, but not close to 45:00.

Also on Saturday, I went out for a 1.5 mile run with my oldest son who is just starting to run. I then went out immediately afterwards to complete my run and I bonked. I got so hungry midway through the run that I just stopped after 2 miles and then walked home the rest of the way. It has been at least a year or two that this has occurred that I honestly do not remember the exact time that I previously could not finish a run.

When I got home, I decided I would go out and try again in the evening. I am glad that I went for it. I went from having one of the worst runs ever to having one of the best.Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-70260765560628421752017-02-02T03:00:00.000+02:002017-02-02T03:00:08.253+02:00February 2017 GoalsFebruary is another tough month for me because of the weather. This February, I am hoping to reach 20 days running during the month. I have never made it this many days in this month. This mainly has to do with February being 2-3 days shorter than the others months of the year.

I am also would like at 2 runs of 7 miles and one run of 8 miles.

I may attempt one day of speed and try to break 45 minutes in the 10K. I am very close, My personal best is at 45:27, so this is doable. I anticipate this falling at some point o 2017.

What do you have planned for 2017?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-71716985711769059392017-02-01T03:00:00.000+02:002017-02-01T03:00:00.154+02:00January 2017 RecapWhat a month!! 123.01 miles in 22 days. This was my best month not including April and May of 2015 when I ran every day during those two months. This was only the second month that I exceeded 120 miles for the month. Last time was 3.5 years ago in July 2013 when I ran 121.0 Miles over 25 days and that included an 11 mile run.

January has historically been one of my weaker months, I really do not like running in the cold. My motivation just drops to nil the colder the temperatures fall. Also, here in Israel, January can be a very wet month. I have been lucky this past January. It was drier and warmer than in the past years.

I started off the month by running 7 out the first 8 days and finished out the first half with getting out there 12 out of 15 days with a mileage total of 68.08. Towards the end of the month, we had a few days of rain and I had to get on the exercise bike for a couple of the nights. These rides are usually shorter than I typically run.

I had 10 runs over 6 miles during the month. I even added jump-roping to do after some of the runs. I was very happy with my consistency over the month and am looking forward to carrying the momentum into February.

How was your January?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-90132904920619939372017-01-26T21:44:00.001+02:002017-01-26T21:44:05.765+02:00Only 30 MinutesTonight, I was all set to go out for a run but then the skies opened up and it started to rain. I was surprised as I checked the rain radar a few minutes before and thought I had about an hour before it started to rain.

I did the next best thing and set up my exercise bike. I was hoping to do at least 40 minutes and maybe even make it to an hour on the bike. I quickly checked for a movie and decided on, Jurassic Park, the Lost World.

I knew about five minutes in that it was not going to be my night. It was hot. We had the heat on as it is cold outside and the hot air was blowing on me. I turned off the heat and cracked the door to allow some cold air to circulate, but that didn't help.

I decided to stop at the 30 minute mark. Recently, I would have considered this a failure, however, I am trying a new motto this year. A short workout is better than no workout.
I started doing jumping jacks to show the kids what they were and to my surprise, my heart rate was up and I was feeling good. I am looking to incorporate some more of these types of exercises into my routine.

I have jumping jacks, push ups, situps and maybe some weights. What are your favorite non running activities to try at home?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-46534011023615572862013-12-17T16:00:00.000+02:002013-12-17T16:00:02.018+02:00Its Cold! Its cold here. For the first time I can remember, we have had a few days where frost is on the ground and cars. Very unusual for where I live. Running when it is cold out is not my favorite thing to do. I love the summer and the heat, so I pretty much just try to get through the cold days as best as I can.

I have gloves and and ear warmers that fit over my hat, that I wear. I also either where a long sleeve shirt or a jacket depending if it is wet or windy out. Also, for the really cold days, I will wear pants rather than shorts.

However, what I noticed, I am only cold for about the first 5-10 minutes of my run and then I am comfortable. Sometimes, I feel I am wearing too many layers and start to peel them off. First goes my ear warmers and then the gloves. These either fit into my pack or pockets. Last, I unzip the jacket if I am getting too warm.

How do you decide what to wear when it is cold out?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-63428774700765817012013-12-16T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-16T03:00:01.990+02:00240 Days!I made it to 240 days running this year. This is 1 more than I did last year. My goal for 2013 was 250. As the weekend is ending, I am at 241 and only need 9 days to make it. Its going to be close.

I have been making an effort to try to make it out for a short run on the days when I am not feeling it or when time is short. Just the other day, I ran 3 miles and then made it home in time to pick up the kids from school. We had some rain and during the break in the rain, I made it out again for 3 miles.

My personal rule is to only go for a run, if I can get in 3 miles. Any thing less, its easier to take a day off. Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-65920594848783712013-12-12T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-12T03:00:02.478+02:00A Storm is ComingHere in Israel, we are in the midst of a 5 day storm. I am not sure how much I will be able to get out for my run during the next few days. I am ok with this. I will try to get some things done around the house to make my off days worthwhile.

If I do decide to try to squeeze in a run, I will most likely run my loop which will leave me about 5-10 minutes walk away from home. How do you handle the poor weather?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-4765705801528789182013-12-11T17:38:00.001+02:002013-12-11T17:38:38.427+02:00JacketIt was raining on and off here and I was not sure if I would get out for my run. Finally, it looked like the storm would break and I could get out there. I got dressed and headed out. After about 3 minutes of running, it started to rain. I had to make a decision about whether to continue to go home and get my jacket.

I decided to go home and pick up my jacket. Of course after I returned and was out for about 5 more minutes, the rain stopped and the sun came out. I was a little warm in my coat, but I still ran 4 miles. It felt good to get out there. Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-21014310125849726502013-12-09T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-09T03:00:02.579+02:00Preparing for some time offAround the end of this month, I may have a 5-7 days where I will not be able to get outside for a run, so I am trying to think of alternatives to help out during that week. I have come up with some creative ideas.

First, I can try to run inside. This would be more of sprints up and down my small hall way. I may bring up my mini exercise bike and try that again. I am going to try to take longer walks during the day to make up for the running I may miss.

There is also the possibility to just enjoy the days off and then a take a week with short runs to get back into it before adding longer runs. Maybe there is a chance that 2 or 3 of those days, I will be able to get a baby sitter and be able to get out for at least 30 minutes.

How have you handled an expected layoff?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-65926932900349136442013-12-06T10:00:00.001+02:002013-12-06T10:00:12.478+02:00Cold RunWinter has finally arrived. We had our first real rain of the season yesterday. The temperatures are turning colder. Yesterday was the first time I had to wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt to go running. I was trying to time my run for when there was a break in the weather.

Around 5:00pm, it looked like it was starting to clear up over our city. I could see the stars and the moon in part of the sky. However, running when it is wet outside can be dangerous. I have tripped in the past and luckily did not get injured minus a few scrapes.

I knew I was going to run a short route and go a little slower. I am very careful over the crosswalks and painted curbs as these are slippery when wet. I thought about extending my run to 4 miles, but then about halfway it started to drizzle. I was not looking to be caught in the rain.Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-20093850487466137862013-12-04T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-04T03:00:05.937+02:00Just What I NeededI made the smart decision to end my running streak after 10 days. On the tenth day, once I was out there, I was starting to feel it in my runs. I was a little tired. Today, when I went out, I felt fresh. Instead of just pushing through 3 miles just to get a run in and keep the streak alive, I made it 4.7 miles at a nice pace.

I decided to try combining two routes and seeing how I made out. It was a little less than 5 miles, but as I have learned from Running Without A Watch, there is not a big difference between 4.7 and 5 miles. I do not need to run around in circles just to make it an even 5.0.

Sometimes a day off is just what you need.Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-89337437624347622792013-12-03T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-03T03:00:07.141+02:00StreakingI had a 10 day running streak going until this evening when I decided to take a night off. Personally, I think running streaks are ridiculous. I think the record currently is 40 years of someone running at least a mile each day. To me running a mile is not considered a workout. I could have gone out tonight for less than 10 minutes to keep my running streak alive, but its not worth it.

Last night, I started feeling a little tired during my run and this morning the bottoms of my feet hurt. I knew today would be a great day to skip. Plus I was home with kids which means I was exhausted by the time they went to bed. Tonight was a good night to skip. Plus tommorow, I am able to go out for a run mid morning rather than waiting until the evening.

My advice to you with regards to a running streak. Keep at it until your body tells you to stop. If you are only going to do 1 mile when you usually do 3 just to keep the streak alive, I'd say skip it and enjoy the rest day.Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-24330742769858868972013-12-02T03:00:00.000+02:002013-12-02T03:00:01.869+02:00November UpdateI ran 92.3 miles over 21 days for the month. I finished on a 9 day streak. It was close, I was not sure if I was going to make it to 20 days. Once the time change hit and the days got darker earlier, plus the cold weather, it made it very difficult to become motivated to get out. It took me almost to the last two weeks before I woke up and got back out there consistently.

For December, I am hoping to do 100 miles over 22 day. However, as long as I do 80 over 20 days, I will reach my goals of at least 250 days running and a 10th straight month of at least 80 miles over 20 days running.

How was your November?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-89303152591452469962013-11-27T20:33:00.001+02:002013-11-27T20:33:47.285+02:00Memory RunI found out there was a 2K race tonight in my city. I was not sure what kind of "race" this would be. I thought I would just run up to the starting line, start the race and then continue on. I go to the starting line and then we waited about 20 minutes for the race to start.

After the made the announcements about 50 people including I headed off for a run/walk. It turned out this was a memory race in other of someone. The person's father led the race and noone passed. He was going at a quick pace and soon the race was in two groups. The fast group of runners and the walkers.

Being in the lead group, we ran some of the streets and then we would stop and hear a quick speech and then run some more. I ran with the group until the last stop and then continued on. I did about 3 miles and even though, I didn't get in the type of work out I wanted, it still felt nice. Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-50500701482076359632013-11-25T22:07:00.001+02:002013-11-25T22:07:54.777+02:001000 MilesI did it. I completed my 2013 goal of reaching 1000 miles for the year. I even did it with about 6 weeks left in the year. I started this goal last year, but it was about October when I decided to push for it. I came up short.

This year it helped that I have achieved a few runs of double digits and lots of 6, 7, 8 mile runs. Also, I have increased my typical run from 3 to 4 miles. Now 3 miles are for when I just want to get a quick workout but do not have much time.

I am still working on my goal for amount of days running for the year. My goal was 250 days and I am up to 227, so it is still well within reach.

How are you 2013 goals coming along?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-17133244209844102012013-11-22T03:00:00.000+02:002013-11-22T03:00:00.980+02:00So CloseFor some reason, I am obsessed with trying to run at least 80 miles over 20 days each month. Part of the reason, I started running without a watch was to take the pressure of my running. It worked. My running became more relaxed. I got faster. My endurance increased and I ran farther than I ever thought I could. I have reached double digits on a few occasions this year. Now the only thing stopping me from running 10 miles is if I feel like it, not if I can.

For November so far, I am at 57.3 miles over 12 days. To reach 20 days, I will need to run 8 out of the next 10 days. As I have stated before, sometimes life gets in the way as it should and you are better off getting some things done around the house or preparing some meals rather than going for a run.

In fact tonight, I am debating on whether to head out for a run or not. We need food shopping done and I cannot leave the house until my wife arrives home with our oldest son. If I do decide to go running, do I go before or after. Before means, I won't get to the store until close to 8:00. If I go shopping first, then I wont go running until about that time. That would make for a late evening.

If I skip tonight, that leaves me 9 days left in the month to try to get out there an run at least 8 days. Only 1 day off. It would be cutting it close.

What would you decide?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3136421103059718062.post-37755883404604704552013-11-21T03:00:00.000+02:002013-11-21T03:00:04.323+02:00Double DigitsI finally made it to double digits again. The last time I tried was when I went 9.5 and then crashed and burned and had to the walk remaining distance home. I was really hoping to do 6 or 7 miles. I knew it was a good night to try to go long as I had nothing to do at the house and I was take my wife out to dinner the next night.

I made it to my 4 mile turnout and then went left. Doing this would add 2 more miles to the route as I looped out one neighborhood and then back. I then made the turn to add 1 more mile. 7 was a great number as it has even been a while since I have done this amount.

I was feeling great and the weather was cool enough to actually be enjoyable. I decided to go for it and complete the loop that would be 10 miles when I finished. The hard part about this loop is that there is a 1.5 mile part straight uphill. Tough! My shoelace came undone about halfway so I had to stop and start again.

I completed the run and felt great. I took the next day off and then went out for a nice 4 mile run. It felt great to get back to double digits. I have been wanting to run this hill and then continue up past the playground, up another hill to reach the main road.

My main reason for skipping this is that I had no way to measure how far I was running. Yesterday, I took my watch to see if I can figure out the distance and I went for it. I ran up this steep hill and then made to my mile marker in about 10 minutes.

I have reached this point in 7:30 before. I was not going for a speed record, but I also wasnt running too slow. I was at my usual pace of 9 - 9:15 a mile. I counted it as 1 mile and stopped my watch. I then continued on and did 4 miles. It was nice to finally accomplish a run that I have been keeping my eye on every time I walk up it.

I do have to say, it was a lot easier running up it than pushing a double stroller up it. I also do not feel too motivated to cook these healthy meals. I have been eating lots of homemade pizzas and fries or eggs for dinner. For lunch, it is has been a struggle as well. I may take a salad, but it does not leave me as fulfilled as they used to. Or I have been taking some cereal to have a cereal and milk snack at work Not what I used to take.

Finally this week, I took some time to make a nice meal. I made three pieces of salmon with whole wheat pasta and steamed veggies for dinner. We are going to make a nice bean stew for me to take to work with some pasta or whole wheat couscous. This will be something that I can heat up that will keep me filled for the day.
Once the time change occurs and it gets darker sooner, I am a complete mess. I lose a lot of motivation. Its hard to go out and run for a while and it is dark and cold. This happens to me every year. I work through it, but it takes time.

So far, I have only ran 9 days out of 16 so this month. That means I have missed 7 days!!! Out of those 7 days, I could have ran at least 5 of them. But I was feeling unmotivated. Its hard, when two days a week, I take my son to a class and then get home around 6:30. One night I go food shopping and Friday nights, I sometimes skip to have a nice evening with my wife. we can eat an early dinner and clean up and then have some time together.

With 14 days left this month, I do not have too many days left to skip if I want to make it to 20 days this month running. What are some of the tricks you use to keep yourself motivated?Runnerwithoutawatchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00040966393524460715noreply@blogger.com0
